Aali Masjid: Open Ground and a Historic Srinagar Mosque
Aali Masjid, also written Ali Masjid, is a historic mosque in Srinagar's Eidgah area.

Aali Masjid, also written Ali Masjid, is a historic mosque in Srinagar's Eidgah area. Its building and adjoining open ground place it within a distinctive urban religious setting. The mosque is a particular site, separate from Jamia Masjid and the other large religious institutions of the old city.[1]
Historic form and open ground
Heritage accounts connect Aali Masjid with the fifteenth-century period of Sultan Hasan Shah. Its timber-supported spaces and pitched-roof character belong to Kashmir's architectural traditions. A founding attribution does not establish that every surviving component is original; subsequent use, deterioration and repair also form part of the site's history.[1]
INTACH's account of its conservation work treats Aali Masjid as a significant building requiring careful restoration. That record provides evidence of a specific conservation programme rather than a general assertion that all old-city buildings have been restored in the same way.[2]
Conservation and interpretation
Restoring a historic building involves choices about material, structural condition and the treatment of earlier fabric. A clean exterior after work does not reveal which parts were retained or replaced. Project records and close documentation can explain those changes more clearly than a single before-and-after image.
The relationship with the Eidgah ground is also important. Open space can have religious and community meanings that are different from those of an enclosed prayer hall. A map marker for the mosque should not be treated as a surveyed boundary of the whole open area or an instruction to use every surrounding path.
Compare Jamia Masjid for another timber-related mosque history and Pathar Masjid for a contrasting stone building. Dastgeer Sahib adds a reconstruction history with different circumstances. These comparisons identify building types and interventions without assuming that shared materials mean shared founders or dates.
The adjoining ground and the enclosed building create different experiences of space, and both deserve attention in documenting the site.
