Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station, code SVDK, serves Katra in Reasi district. The station connects the town with the railway network and supports journeys associated with the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. It is a rail arrival facility, distinct from the shrine and from the pedestrian pilgrimage route. A railway ticket to Katra does not itself establish registration or permission for every onward activity.[1]

The arrival of rail at Katra

The Udhampur–Katra railway line was dedicated on 4 July 2014. The official opening record describes the new station and the commencement of rail access to Katra. At that date the onward link toward Banihal was still incomplete, a historical qualification that should not be copied as if it describes the present network.[2]

The station became part of a wider through-route as the remaining USBRL sections were completed. Official June 2025 announcements recorded the inauguration of the Chenab and Anji bridges and the launch of Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat services. Service patterns can subsequently change, so the event establishes a network milestone rather than a permanent timetable.[3]

Railway and pilgrimage geography

Katra's role illustrates the difference between a transport gateway and a destination. A station can reduce the distance travelled by road while leaving an onward journey to be completed separately. The town, boarding point and shrine should each be located on their own terms; a marker for SVDK cannot serve as the exact location of all three.

Information about passenger movement also needs scale. Crowds vary by season and service, and facilities may be affected by maintenance or operating arrangements. An encyclopedia can explain why the station is important without promising a particular queue length, platform or transfer vehicle. For a journey, the booked train and current notices should guide planning.

Read the linked Anji Khad Bridge and Chenab Rail Bridge entries to understand the terrain and engineering of the route beyond Katra. Compare Jammu Tawi as another gateway and Shiv Khori as a separate Reasi pilgrimage site. Shared district location does not imply that these places are adjacent or that one transport arrangement serves them all.
