Jammu Tawi Railway Station: A Gateway to the Jammu Region
Jammu Tawi railway station, code JAT, is a major rail gateway for Jammu city and the surrounding region.

Jammu Tawi railway station, code JAT, is a major rail gateway for Jammu city and the surrounding region. The station's name refers to Jammu and the Tawi river, but the railway facility has its own location and boundaries. Long-distance connections, regional travel and onward road journeys meet here, making it an important subject in the transport geography of Jammu and Kashmir.[1]
A gateway with a changing role
The Jammu district administration identifies Jammu Tawi in its transport information. For many visitors it is the rail arrival point from which the next part of a journey proceeds by road. That role should be distinguished from the separate stations at Udhampur and Katra; a shared regional destination does not make their station codes or access points interchangeable.[2]
Jammu Tawi opened in the early 1970s as the railway reached Jammu. Subsequent extensions toward Udhampur and Katra, followed by the Kashmir rail project, changed the network around it. Historical descriptions of Jammu as the nearest railhead for every Kashmir destination can therefore become outdated even when they remain on official tourism pages.[1]
The completed USBRL link was inaugurated in June 2025. This network milestone does not mean that every train runs directly through all stations or that a ticket to Jammu includes an onward connection. The current timetable and the route of the booked service remain the relevant sources for an actual journey.[3]
Understanding a station record
Station code, platform information and city geography answer different questions. JAT is useful for selecting the correct station in booking and status systems. A platform number belongs to a particular service and operating situation; it should not be fixed in a general encyclopedia entry. The same caution applies to lists of trains, which can change without changing the station's identity.
For related reading, compare Katra station and Banihal station. Jammu Airport provides a separate city gateway, while Bahu Fort places the Tawi in Jammu's wider landscape. The station marker assists orientation; anyone needing step-free access or boarding assistance should confirm the arrangements for their particular service.
