Kashmir Papier-mâché: Moulded Paper and Painted Surfaces
Kashmir papier-mâché is a craft in which shaped paper-based forms receive carefully painted decoration.

Kashmir papier-mâché is a craft in which shaped paper-based forms receive carefully painted decoration. Boxes, bowls and other ornamental objects are familiar examples. The object has at least two related histories: the construction of its body and the painting of its surface. A pattern alone cannot establish the material hidden beneath it.[1]
Form and painted surface
The national handicrafts account describes the tradition through its regional making and decoration. The terms sakhtsazi and naqashi distinguish forming the object from painting it. This separation recognises different kinds of skill while showing why the final piece depends on both. Floral, animal and other motifs appear in varied compositions rather than one compulsory design.[2]
In a finished object, the painted surface can conceal joins, layers and the material of the form. Examining the edge, interior and underside may therefore answer different questions from looking at the decoration. The relationship between shape and pattern is also important: the design has to work across a curved or angular surface.
A regional craft with individual makers
Official GI craft records identify Kashmir paper mache among the region's registered traditions. That recognition supplies a provenance framework, but a generic sales description does not establish the history of an individual piece. A useful record identifies maker, date, materials and any later repair wherever these are known.[3]
Historical accounts often connect the craft with wider Persianate artistic influences. Such connections should not erase the work of Kashmiri makers or imply that every present object repeats an unchanged medieval method. Traditions are sustained through practice, adaptation and the choices of people making objects now.
